Mission & Vision
HOSA is a global student organization that provides a unique program of leadership development, technical skills training and recognition exclusively for middle school, secondary, postsecondary, and collegiate students enrolled in health and biomedical sciences. HOSA is 100% health.

Not a club. An instructional methodology.
HOSA is not an extracurricular activity students join for one period a week. It is a structured methodology integrated into Health and Biomedical Science curriculum — and works best when classroom instruction, technical skills training, and HOSA chapter activities reinforce each other across the full academic year. This is why university admissions officers and healthcare employers recognize HOSA as a credible signal of sustained engagement, not a one-shot recognition.
100% Health · the throughline since 1976.
Every HOSA program — competitive events, conferences, scholarships, leadership academies, alumni network — exists for one purpose: prepare members for careers in the global health workforce. Half a century in, that focus has not diluted. As the healthcare industry has shifted toward biotechnology, telemedicine, public health, and digital health, HOSA’s competitive event categories have evolved with it, but the throughline remains: 100% health, every program.
50-Year Timeline · 1976 to 2026
From a handful of founding chapters in 1976 to a global presence of 5,000+ chapters across the US, US territories, Canada, China and beyond, HOSA’s growth has tracked the rising demand for health-workforce education. Six milestones below shape the 50-year arc — culminating in the 2026 anniversary year that gives the global event in June particular weight.
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 1976 | HOSA founded as Health Occupations Students of America. Initial network of state chapters in the United States, focused on secondary-school health-occupations programs. |
| 1990s | Postsecondary & collegiate divisions established. Competitive events expand from health-occupations basics to include emerging biomedical sciences. Annual International Leadership Conference becomes the marquee event. |
| 2000s | International expansion. Chartered associations form in Canada, Mexico, and across Asia. ILC attendance grows past 8,000 annually. HOSA Scholarship endowment expanded with partner-sponsored awards. |
| 2010s | Competitive events portfolio reaches 50+ across five categories. HOSA membership crosses 200,000. Washington Leadership Academy (WLA) launched to develop advocacy & policy fluency among collegiate members. |
| 2022 | HOSA brand rebrand. Modernized identity: lowercase mark, navy + maroon + tan palette (PMS 7462 / 484 / 481), formal positioning as HOSA — Future Health Professionals. Brand Style Guide published. |
| 2025 | HOSA China program rebrands as SKT-iHOSA — Innovative Health Originator for Social Well-being Advancement. Localized three-track structure (ATC / CCE / BCE) for Chinese senior-secondary students. Registration on Webloom opens June 7. |
| 2026 | 50th Anniversary. Global stage event June 17–20, 2026 — the largest gathering in HOSA history. China site event March / mid-April 2026 feeds the international qualification pipeline. |
Global Reach · 50 chartered associations
HOSA is organized as a federation of chartered state and country associations. Each association operates local conferences, manages member recruitment, and feeds qualifying students into ILC. Below is a representative cross-section of the network — the SKT-iHOSA program in China is the operational arm Chinese students engage with first.
Chartered associations in all 50 US states plus US territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, US Virgin Islands). Each runs annual state conferences that feed into ILC.
Canada and Mexico operate national-level affiliates. Cross-border collaboration on bilingual events & binational service projects.
Operated by SKT as domestic representative. Three-track structure (ATC / CCE / BCE) for grades 9–12. Academic mentorship from Hanlin Education. Platform: Webloom.
Additional international affiliates across Asia and partner schools globally. Chinese international school students often join via SKT-iHOSA China or via their school’s affiliated chapter.
Why the 50th ILC matters
The 2026 International Leadership Conference is the climactic event of HOSA’s 50-year arc. Held June 17–20, 2026, it convenes top performers from every chartered association — including a growing Chinese cohort qualified through the SKT-iHOSA China site event — for four days of competition finals, leadership programming, and recognition.
For Chinese students looking at US, UK, Canadian, or other healthcare-pathway university applications, attendance at the 50th ILC represents both a credential and a credible academic narrative. The conference is recognized by admissions officers because the qualification process — registration → assessment → China site → global stage — operates over a coherent academic year.
Hall of Fame & alumni outcomes
Over five decades, HOSA alumni have moved into every corner of the global healthcare workforce — medical school, dental school, nursing programs, public health agencies, biotechnology research, and healthcare policy. The HOSA Hall of Fame recognizes members whose careers reflect the leadership development the organization is built around.
MD / DDS / RN / PA
A substantial share of HOSA alumni proceed to medical school (MD/DO), dental school (DDS), nursing programs (BSN/RN), and physician assistant pathways. HOSA participation appears repeatedly on med school AMCAS applications as sustained healthcare exposure.
Biotechnology · Pharma · Bioinformatics
HOSA alumni occupy research and industry positions in biotech, pharmaceutical R&D, medical-device innovation, and clinical-trial operations. Recent additions to the competitive events portfolio (Medical Innovation, Biotechnology, Forensic Medicine) reflect the talent pipeline these industries draw from.
MPH · Hospital Admin · CDC / WHO
Alumni in public-health agencies, hospital administration, healthcare consulting, and global-health organizations like CDC, FDA, and WHO. Washington Leadership Academy graduates often pursue this pathway. The BCE track in iHOSA China is designed for students inclined this direction.
